Common Core Standards - "I Can.." statements

In our Learning Log meeting this morning, we discussed the "intense verbage" used in the Common Core standards. They are not student-friendly, and sometimes not even parent or teacher-friendly.

One the the teachers (Thank you, Mrs. Light) mentioned "I Can" statements based on Common Core that she had seen on Pinterest. Here is what I found when I googled "I Can Common Core Statements.

It has "I Can" statements for K - 5th! Perfect! You can download a grade specific set.

UPDATE: Other places to find "I Can" statements.

Common Core Notes

I went to the "Connecting the Dots" seminar last Thursday (4/25/2013). Here are some of the highlights regarding Common Core...

WHY COMMON CORE?
  • We are becoming a more transient society, not just from one area of a town or state to another, but across the country.
  • There is a need for consistency among the states in setting a standard for educational aptitude.

FORMAT AND DESIGN OF COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS:
  • Domain: A huge idea that bridges across grade levels.
    • 5 domains for 3-5
      1. Operations and Algebra Thinking (OA)
      2. Number and Operations Base (NBT)
      3. Number Operations - Fractions (NF)
      4. Measurement and Data (MD)
      5. Geometry (G)
  • Cluster: A group of related Standards
  • Standard: Defines what a student should be able to understand and do.
  • See page 19 of PDF below for a visual model.
  • See page21 of PDF below for a listing of Domains by Grade Bands
  • See page 22 of PDF below for a listing of Standards assigned to each Domain
STANDARDS FOR MATHEMATICAL PRACTICE:
  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  4. Model with mathematics.
  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
  6. Attend to precision.
  7. Look for and make use of structure.
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
  • See page 36 through 43 in PDF below for greater detail of each practice.
